Choose an Em Dash Replacement

Em-dash replacement starts enabled with hyphen selected. Disable the rule to keep every em dash. En dashes remain unchanged unless you explicitly enable their separate rule.

Em Dash vs En Dash vs Hyphen

These marks have different typographic roles. A focused tool should not replace all three under one vague punctuation rule.

  • Em dash —

The em dash often marks an interruption or parenthetical break. Replacing it may require a comma, parentheses, or sentence rewrite rather than a mechanical symbol swap.

  • En dash –

The en dash commonly expresses a range or relationship, as in 9–11 September. Its replacement is controlled separately.

  • Hyphen -

The hyphen joins compound terms. It is narrower and is not a semantic equivalent for every em dash.

Choose the Right Replacement

Select an output based on grammar and destination constraints, then read the resulting sentence aloud before copying.

  • Keep

Disable replacement when the dash is intentional and supported by the destination.

  • Hyphen or space

Useful for systems with limited character support, but the result may be typographically or grammatically weaker.

  • Period

A period may work when both sides form complete thoughts. Capitalization is not changed automatically.

  • Remove

Removing the mark without replacement can join words or clauses incorrectly, so this is the highest-review option.

Before and After

Only the selected dash character changes; the tool does not rewrite surrounding words or silently repair grammar.

It is important to note that the trial included only twelve participants, and this limitation is pivotal.

The trial included only twelve participants, which limits the conclusion.

Punctuation Guidance and Limits

Frequent em dashes are not reliable proof of AI authorship. Human writers use them, style guides differ, and replacing punctuation solely to influence a detector can damage clear prose. This local tool reports deterministic character substitutions only. It does not change capitalization, add conjunctions, split clauses intelligently, or guarantee detector outcomes.

  • Review grammar

A symbol replacement may require a comma, parentheses, or a rewritten sentence that this tool intentionally does not invent.

  • Protect ranges

Keep en-dash replacement disabled when dates and numeric ranges should remain typographically intact.

  • Clean broader formatting elsewhere

Use the main cleaner for hidden characters, spaces, and optional Markdown rules.

  • Evidence source

Exact fixtures cover keep, hyphen, space, period, and remove choices.

  • Correction policy

Replacement changes require matching tests and page documentation.

  • Review scope

Punctuation replacement only; wording quality and detector outcomes are not promised.
